Three Design Mistakes You're Making That Drives Away Potential Clients
Social media and influencer marketing relies on the power of image and video. Not a day goes by where I'm almost suckered into buying a subscription box filled with sugar gummy bears to improve my hair quality. All because of a couple convincing imagery from top influencers.
I have to admit - it did pull my interest. But like a good witch, I resisted.
You might be wondering - how can I achieve that epic pull and win my clients over to give a crap on my content?
Working with small business owners and some members in the community, I've noticed a couple of things that I can summarise as the top three fatal mistakes when promoting your content. Regardless of what industry you fall under, here is my take:
The Clash Of The Font Stacks
One of the first key things when I look at a post on social media is the usage of typography laid out on the image. These days, it’s common to see a Helvetica Neue pop up on the design for the sake of simplicity. But what about those far out fonts? You know, the ones where they decided to mix decorative fonts with another set of script ones?
Consider apples and oranges. They’re both fruits, but they have different textures and flavors. Same goes with the usage of the font stacks. I’ve seen where people would lovingly abuse a variation of the Brusher script with another script font and that’s a recipe for disaster. Not only it looks tacky, but it makes it hard to read if you’re trying to promote your brand. I would suggest taking one over the top font for a bold emphasis and leaving the rest of the text simplified to match up with the theme.
There’s a reason why people love the phrase “Less is more.” When you’re working with images (no matter the size), take into consideration with the real estate of the design. I’ve seen designs where it looks like a whole novel was written in those tiny dimensions. Sort of like packing a bunch of sardines in a can (minus the smell, of course). As a result, there’s no white space left and you’re left with a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. Rather than fitting everything into one shot, use this time to use key words that grab the client’s attention. Do your research on certain “buzzwords”. If needed, use the opportunity to expand more in a written post so that people can see why the image was posted.

Yes, what I wrote on the title is a mouthful (and probably considered vomit text)…but hey, you get my drift.
If there’s one thing that irks me the most, it’s the poor usage of color palettes. You simply cannot just slap a color or two and call it a day without having some thought. A good understanding of color psychology and the color wheel is crucial if you want your message to be heard. Evoke people’s feelings, not turn them away.
